The objectives of this appendix are the following:

 

 

1. To explain the connection between depth-of-field (DoF) and the resolution in an image.

2. To derive equations for front and back depths-of-field.

3. To introduce the concept of the hyperfocal distance.

The variables required for the DoF computation are illustrated in Figure J.1. For a lens of focal length f, an object at a distance p from the lens will be focused at a distance q behind the lens. For thick or multi-component lenses, p is measured from the first principal plane and q is measured from the second principal plane.
