As existing Ruby on Rails deployments grow in size and adoption expands into larger application environments, new methods are required to interface with heterogeneous systems and to operate at scale. While the word scalability with respect to Rails has been a hotly debated topic both inside and outside the community, the meaning of the word scale in this text is two fold.
