8 Deviation Management

The added value of testing lies mainly in the detection and reporting of a system’s deviations from its requirements. To be able to correct a deviation, development requires as much detailed information as possible about symptoms, reproduction, and consequences of abnormal system behavior. The test process must therefore place particular focus on accurate documentation and tracking of deviations. Part of this process is a risk estimation of the consequences of defects remaining in the system.
