Today, this art form has expanded in popularity to become a genre of its own. Advances in plastics technology and inventive mechanics adapted from other fields make possible a new approach to creating awesome characters and mutations almost beyond the scope of the imagination. Each time a new film or artist comes to the scene, fresh concepts are created that titillate the viewer with increasingly frightening, bizarre, or horrific effects.
