Developing Solutions

Business Intelligence Development Studio is a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 tool that has project types specific to SQL Server 2005. Business Intelligence Studio is the main tool used to develop Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services projects—it supplies templates, designers, tools, and wizards specific to each project type.

If you install Visual Studio 2005, the Business Intelligence Development Studio project types will be added to Visual Studio 2005. Launching Business Intelligence Development Studio will launch Visual Studio 2005.

The Business Intelligence Studio for a new project is shown in the following figure.

The Business Intelligence Studio IDE contains a number of areas that are used together to develop, modify, debug, and test SSIS solutions. The key IDE elements are described in the following subsections.

Solution Explorer

A solution is a container used to manage groups of projects and resources as part of a larger business solution. The Solution Explorer pane shows the hierarchy of objects categorized into the following groups:

Data Sources: connections that can be shared among multiple packages in a solution.

Data Source Views: a subset of data—tables, views, and named queries—in a data source that can be shared among multiple packages.
