UNDOUBTEDLY, IF YOU ARE READING this book you are most likely building a company that will be hosted in the cloud. The cloud, simply put, is a service that provides the underlying infrastructure to host whatever system or application you might be building. Also referred to as infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), this service usually includes the management of servers and data centers. There are many large providers in this space, including Amazon Web Services (AWS),1 Microsoft Azure,2 Google Cloud Platform (GCP),3 IBM Cloud,4 Oracle Cloud,5 and Alibaba Cloud.6 This takes all the pain of managing a data center, and even the servers in the data center, away from the customer and allows you to build and host your product in a fast and convenient way. Figure 6.1 shows the Gartner Magic Quadrant for cloud infrastructure as a service.

All of these provide nearly the same services with a few key differences in unique capabilities. Regardless of the provider you select you should closely follow their recommended security configurations for both your account and systems within your account.
