It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
The proxy design pattern
With the proxy design pattern, one type will act as an interface for another type or API. This wrapper type, which is the proxy, can then add functionality to the object, hide the implementation of an API, or restrict access to the object.
