So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Federal Guidelines
If you are setting up a forensic lab, or if you are new to forensics, a good place to start is the federal guidelines. Two agencies in particular—the FBI and the Secret Service—are particularly important.
The FBI
If an incident occurs, the FBI recommends that the first responder preserve the state of the computer at the time of the incident by making a backup copy of any logs, any damaged or altered files, and any other files modified, viewed, or left by the intruder. This last part is critical. Hackers frequently use various tools and may leave traces of their presence.
