Chapter 3 examines the TCP/IP standards process. Because the TCP/IP pro-
tocol suite is intimately associated with the Internet, Chapter 3 begins with a
discussion of the various standards-making organizations and committees
connected with the Internet. Once this is accomplished, the chapter examines
how certain types of documents, referred to as Requests for Comments (RFCs),
evolved into standards. These allow the TCP/IP protocol suite to be contin-
uously updated to support both advances in technology as well as changes
in the communications requirements of businesses, government agencies,
academia, and individual end users.
