7Where Do We Go from Here?

We've come to the end of this book.

It would be very easy for me to give you a summary of all the things we've covered: talking about the inside work that's needed, reminding you to take the time to align your board, to analyse data and be clear on metrics, all the while reminding you that the Four‐Factor RACE model is not linear. It's merely a framework to help make sense of what can feel very scary and abstract at times.

Instead, I'd like to take you on a brief diversion, just for a moment.

Pause and think about where we are in the world right now. Think about what's happened in the last few months, years, decades and even centuries.

Is this our chance to genuinely understand a little bit more about the systemic elements of racism, about challenging our language, our belief systems, our values, and begin to proactively question why things are the way they are, rather than act as passive bystanders? In way we have never been able to do so before?

It strikes me that throughout this book we are fundamentally talking about humanising the impact of racism. Reminding you of what could be the basic need for everyone to be supported to exceed their potential, to feel happy at work, productive, safe and feel like they matter.
