Leaders should focus on creating an environment of clarity, trust, and common purpose so members know what the company stands for and how it intends to fulfill its promise to customers. And then leaders should get out of the way.

First, let’s make a distinction between leadership and management. Leadership is about engaging and motivating people. Management is about designing and running the systems that organize the work. Both are important, and certainly one can be both a leader and a manager.
