18Emerging Threats and Technologies
In today's fast‐paced digital environment, the threats facing organizations are evolving at an unprecedented rate. New technologies, while unlocking remarkable opportunities, also introduce novel vulnerabilities. As businesses and individuals become more interconnected, cybersecurity professionals are tasked with defending against an expanding attack surface that includes everything from artificial intelligence (AI)‐driven attacks to the implications of quantum computing. As such, yesterday's cybersecurity strategies are increasingly inadequate in protecting against tomorrow's threats. Organizations must adopt a forward‐looking mindset to stay ahead, continuously evolving their defenses in response to emerging technologies and the risks they bring.
This chapter explores how cybersecurity professionals can anticipate and respond to these new challenges by focusing on adaptive and future‐ready controls. The traditional approach to control development—where static, predefined measures are implemented and left in place for extended periods—no longer provides sufficient protection. Today's cybersecurity controls must be flexible, scalable, and continuously tested against an ever‐shifting threat landscape. Controls must evolve to accommodate new technologies like 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and edge computing while remaining resilient against increasingly sophisticated threats such as AI‐powered attacks and the rise of quantum computing. ...
