Grandparents
We initially framed the subject of family giving as part of the broader topic of parenting. Parenting, after all, is largely a form of giving. And giving brings us face-to-face with the core challenge of parenting: How do we enhance rather than subsidize our children’s lives even as we let them (and ourselves) grow into free, independent, and flourishing individuals?
But parents are not the only givers in a family. After all, in many cases, they may not have as much to give (at least financially) as their own parents do. We want to consider grandparents, too, both because they have a different relationship to their grandchildren than the children’s parents do and because they are in a different position in their own lives ...
