An ambiguous phrase or sentence is one that has more than one interpretation. In other words, the words fit more than one grammatical structure. The section title “You Can’t Put Too Much Water into a Nuclear Reactor” is an ambiguous sentence from a Saturday Night Live sketch I saw years ago. The characters weren’t sure if they should be careful not to put too much water into the reactor or if they should put lots of water into the reactor.
