Chapter 12 presented the network-communications architecture of 4.4BSD. In this chapter, we examine the network protocols implemented within this framework. The 4.4BSD system supports four major communication domains: DARPA Internet, Xerox Network Systems (NS), ISO/OSI, and local domain (formerly known as the UNIX domain). The local domain does not include network protocols because it operates entirely within a single system. The Internet protocol suite was the first set of protocols implemented within the network architecture of 4.2BSD.
