Chapter 3. Software Defect Prevention

Introduction

Software defect prevention is the most difficult quality topic to discuss, to measure, to improve, and to prove that it has economic value. The reason for this difficulty is because defect prevention is a negative factor that reduces defect potentials. Therefore, it is necessary to have at least two data points for every defect prevention method:

  1. Results of applications that did not use the defect prevention method.
  2. Results of similar applications that did use the defect prevention method.

Of course, two data points are not statistically reliable. As a result of this difficulty, hundreds of applications need to be measured and evaluated to express the probable effects of defect prevention methods. ...
