Comparing dynasty periods is like comparing unums. Sometimes they are distinctly before (less than) or after (greater than), and sometimes they overlap. If asked “Did the Roman Empire strictly precede the Byzantine Empire?” and the only answers allowed are “Yes” or “No,” then we have to answer “No” because there was a period of overlap.
