8. The Editor Recuts Away

After screening, critiquing, and re-critiquing the first cut, it is time to begin recutting the film. Some editors and directors love this part of the film; others despise it. The recutting process encapsulates everything that makes editing what it is—attention to the most minute detail while still paying attention to the whole film.

When I worked on the film Heathers, we continually experimented with the order of different scenes. I would re-edit the film for a week and then screen it again for the director. Sometimes, he would come into the editing room and work on scenes; other times I reworked the scenes with his notes. We then went back to the screening room for another screening.
