How will a 32-hour workweek affect the motivation and productivity of the workforce? The results should be positive for motivation, since workers will have more time for leisure and other activities.¹ Whether this translates into greater productivity during the day is a question that is more difficult to answer, although experiments with a compressed four-day, 40-hour workweek in the 1970s did provide some evidence in this regard. And several small-scale examples exist in which companies or jurisdictions tried out shorter workweeks, offering some results to examine.
