Chapter 54. Pop-Ups
Aside from other marketers, I don't believe I've ever heard anyone say good things about pop-ups—but the things keep on working like gangbusters.
Because of all the pop-up blockers, there's been a mass migration to using JavaScript and HTML layers to emulate a pop-up on the current web page. Technically these are not really pop-ups, because they don't open up a new window (the pop-up cannot be positioned outside the borders of the current window). Here are some resources for creating these new-generation pop-ups:

One of the more recent breeds of pop-up is the lightbox.
With this style of pop-up, most of the page is grayed out, so the only "light" on the page focuses the visitor's attention on your desired message. This is powerful, but definitely something you'll want to test to make sure it's not just scaring your visitors away.
