Chapter 7. Leadership: Directing Success
Who can forget legendary coach Vince Lombardi? Known as one of the all-time greatest coaches in history, Lombardi was named "Coach of the Century" by ESPN, inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame, and had the Super Bowl trophy renamed in his honor. Under Lombardi's leadership, the Green Bay Packers collected six division titles, five NFL championships, and two Super Bowls. When his career ended, he had accumulated a record unmarred by a losing season, and the NFL named him the "1960s Man of the Decade."
What makes a coach like Lombardi such a successful leader? Is it an attitude, a work ethic, certain personality traits that he was born with, or skills that he learned? Is it a demand for attention or obedience, or a promise and delivery of success? As I have discussed throughout this book, I believe it is a combination of all these factors, as well as circumstances, which lead to an exemplary model of leadership like Lombardi.
Leadership is comprised of many variables, but all good leaders want to improve; they always want to win; they are committed to their objectives and willing to do what it takes to keep improving their performance and that of their team. Vince Lombardi said it best: "The spirit, the will to win and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur."
