DURING THOSE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2020, BANCEL jumped from Davos to Washington to Cambridge, trying to marshal support (and dollars) for developing a vaccine against the new Disease X. He met with Dr. Anthony Fauci and others at the government’s infectious-disease research institute, who signaled they were ready to partner, using Disease X as the “stopwatch drill” for rapid vaccine development they had previously planned to do anyway with the Nipah virus.
