Epilogue

DURING MUCH OF THE TIME I WAS WRITING THIS BOOK IN 2021, Covid-19 cases were in retreat, as more and more people gained protection from the vaccines. There were days in the spring and early summer when it seemed possible to me that by the time I turned over the manuscript, Moderna would have helped end a pandemic and moved on to turn its mRNA technology against other diseases. In short, I thought my book might have an ending—a clear date, or at least a time frame, when we all had decided that the pandemic was over.

It doesn’t.

Due to the vagaries of book publishing, this book’s main narrative leaves off in late 2021. As I write this epilogue in March of 2022, the pandemic continues; some say it’s approaching an endemic phase. Reported ...
