Chapter 1. What Is an Engineering Multiplier?
Being a great engineer is no longer defined by your individual contribution alone. Today, it’s defined by the ability to make others around you better, to deliver projects successfully, and to move the whole organization forward.
Being an engineering multiplier means amplifying the productivity and effectiveness of everyone around you. It means not just focusing on your own output, but elevating the entire team and the organization. An engineering multiplier doesn’t just ask “What can I build?”--they ask, “How can I make everyone around me more effective?” I like the term engineering multiplier because it’s a mix of engineering and force multiplier.
There are many ways to multiply your efforts, such as working well with people within or across different teams or through creating systems that help teams work faster and smarter. Each type of multiplier can make an immense impact in its own specific way.
