2 Though the current DN specification, RFC 2253, is fairly strict, the previous version for LDAP version 2, RFC 1779, is much more flexible. It allows the use of ; as a separator, it uses alternate escape mechanisms, and it is very lenient with the use of whitespace. LDAP version 3 implementations must accept input in LDAP version 2 format, but must always return values in LDAP version 3 syntax.
