2 The Geometric Structure of Networks

Networks, which we briefly encountered in Chapter 1, play an increasingly large role in our lives; accordingly, network data plays an increasingly large role in data science. How do we measure the influence of a user on social media? Or judge the robustness of a computer network against hackers? Or identify people who bridge different social groups? These are all questions about the geometric structure of networks, and they are all examples of concepts we will explore in this chapter.
