Tripping the light fantastic

I was lucky to be able to spend a little time photographing at Point Lobos on the coast of California between Carmel and Big Sur. The weather was perfect: raining when I got there but quickly turning to clouds with chiaroscuro lighting effects.

The contrast between clouds with shafts of light and rain-swept vistas led me to play with a variety of effects in post-production to increase tonal and contrast ranges in the image, and to create painterly effects, without deviating too greatly from the scene as it appeared when I shot the image.
