JACKSON STAT E UNIVERSITY (JSU), located in Jackson, Mississippi, the capital and largest city of the state, was founded in 1877 as a teachers college to provide a quality education for antebellum black students. The state awarded the college university status in 1977 to recognize its evolution into a research-intensive institution. During the next twenty-five years, JSU experienced steady growth in undergraduate and graduate students. In 2005, it ranked first among historically black institutions in acquiring federal research funds.1
