Much of this book is focused on tools for monitoring a single UNIX system. You may, however, be responsible for monitoring tens or hundreds of systems. Also, it is likely that you are managing a heterogeneous environment in which it is important to monitor heterogeneous systems consistently. For example, a company may have decided to migrate from UNIX to NT, but does not want to replace their UNIX applications, such as SAP. The company may choose to keep a portion of the application (e.g., the database server) on UNIX, while moving the application servers to NT.
