Appendix Research Methodology

The research underpinning this book, and the examples and accounts within it, draw on several interconnected projects that have extended over seven years. They comprise a broader program of work on high performance.¹

We first came together as researchers to conduct a large-scale international study that during the years 2007–2010 that investigated organizations that performed beyond expectations (PBE) in the public and private sectors.² This study joined research teams from the United States and the United Kingdom and asked three questions:
