Generative AI Everywhere All At Once
Generative AI (or GenAI) is the ability of machines to create new content. It is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), which is the field of computer science that tries to make machines autonomously carry out tasks that we associate with human cognition or creativity. Today, GenAI is capable of creating images, essays, poems, music, and even videos at a human level.
While research on GenAI has been going on for over a decade, it burst onto the public consciousness with the release of ChatGPT (https://oreil.ly/hg_Ii) by OpenAI in November 2022. ChatGPT provided an ability for users to ask for open-ended text (such as “Write a limerick about an office party” or “How do you reverse an array in Python?”) and get answers. ChatGPT became the fastest-growing application ever (https://oreil.ly/ONnn3) , reaching 100 million users in just two months. For comparison, it took TikTok (which was based on an already viable Chinese product called Douyin) nine months and Instagram 2.5 years to reach the 100 million mark.
In this chapter (see Figure 1-1), we will discuss what GenAI is, how it works, why it has gotten so much better recently, and the challenges that remain.
