Where intimate portraits require the collaboration of the subject and necessitate an interaction, candids of individuals and groups of people on the street allow you to slip in with greater ease and less fear. It’s a great place to ease into photographing strangers in strange places.
Street scenes are the easiest to shoot—the busy chaos of a street means people will be less likely to notice you off to the side shooting their activities. Even when you are noticed, people feel less targeted when they are part of a group. Because you are shooting with a wider lens, it’s likely you won’t have it pointed directly at them, which can be enough to reduce any perceived threat or invasion of privacy.
