On-the-Job Assignments
Developing employees is “job one,” to paraphrase an American carmaker. And that “job one” belongs to supervisors. Supervisors have many tools at their disposal; rotational assignments, stretch assignments, project-based assignments, and others. Supervisors decide which learning strategies and developmental assignments will be most beneficial for all employees. Supervisors should consider what each employee needs to know and what developmental assignments are beneficial to both the employee and the organization. Supervisors should then tap into a variety of options in order to provide employees with those assignments. This section addresses temporary assignments that are available for developmental purposes.
