Foreword
In December, 2004, I walked into an IMAX theatre for a screening of Polar Express, curious to see how the film used the new technology of motion capture. But I walked out blown away by the film’s use of an old technology – stereovision, aka 3D.
Until this movie, 3D was noteworthy mostly for being featured in a few 1950s’ horror movies. Well, the real horror of these movies was that they often induced headaches and nausea due to the fuzzy, poorly sync’d analog images. In Polar Express, digital technology had completely solved these problems. The 3D imagery was crisp and vivid and, most importantly, it enhanced the story.
