I am most grateful to the leaders I have known, many of them featured in these pages, who have led their organizations through good times and bad. Their willingness to share their insights with me is a great gift to all those emerging leaders who are seeking to use their leadership to make a difference in the world.

Some sections of this book appeared originally in my book True North: Emerging Leader Edition, coauthored with Zach Clayton. Zach is the founder and CEO of Three Ships, which owns a collection of digital marketplace businesses that enable brands to efficiently connect with consumers and help them buy with confidence. Zach did an amazing job in creating True North with me. He is a brilliant person and a great leader and entrepreneur.

I'd also like to acknowledge the work of two colleagues who contributed many of the activities for this book: Scott Snook and Nick Craig. Scott was a Senior Lecturer of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, where he taught courses in leadership and leader development. Nick is the president of Core Leadership Institute, a leadership consulting firm teaching authentic leadership programs around the globe. Both Scott and Nick have devoted their lives to enabling leaders to discover their True North.

Finally, none of this would have been possible without the unwavering support, encouragement, insights, and patience of my wife, Penny, from whom I have learned so much about people and leading them.
