Solarization. This is a photographic effect that is obtained by applying diffuse light to
a developing photograph, and then continuing with the development. The result, which
seems somehow magical, is that the image can be partly positive and partly negative.

This effect has been used by many photographers, but can be a fairly hit or miss affair in
the photographic darkroom. However, it is very easy to create solarization effects digitally.
We have seen examples of solarization functions in Chapter 4; now we explore how they
can be applied.
