When I was in my twenties, I worked in a dark and dingy and wonderful used bookstore. It was there, on a dusty shelf, that I came upon a book about crayon rubbings from 1967. I’d made crayon rubbings when I was a kid: coins, a comb, tree bark, and lots of other textures. But I’d never made rubbings from my own cut-out imagery, which is what the book was all about. Complex and layered compositions made by children crowded the pages of that book, and I loved the simplicity and depth of the technique. I was hooked!
