It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
CHAPTER 3The Chicago Tribune
In 1964, armed with an expanded portfolio and the new realization that I really should pursue a college degree, I left Mike Rotunno and airport photography. I applied for a job working nights in the Chicago Tribune photo lab. I reasoned that I could attend college during the day and do the mindless lab-work at night while having time to study during “down time.”
Chief Photographer Al Madsen had other plans. At 20 years of age, I became the youngest staff photographer at the Chicago Tribune. It was sink or swim.
My nights were spent chasing crime, civil rights demonstrations, and even parades of returning astronauts. The Tribune’s ironclad policy required their photographers to use either medium 2¼ format or 4×5 press ...
