In 1964, armed with an expanded portfolio and the new realization that I really should pursue a college degree, I left Mike Rotunno and airport photography. I applied for a job working nights in the Chicago Tribune photo lab. I reasoned that I could attend college during the day and do the mindless lab-work at night while having time to study during “down time.”

Chief Photographer Al Madsen had other plans. At 20 years of age, I became the youngest staff photographer at the Chicago Tribune. It was sink or swim.
