In the past several decades, we have witnessed an explosion of
multimedia content, such as music, images, and video. One of
the main driving forces behind this phenomenon is the availability
of effective compression algorithms for such data. While conven-
tional text compression such as ZIP exploits predictabilities in the
bit representation of the input text, the compression of visual data,
such as an image, typically focuses on organizing regularities in its
visual perception.
