The first Radio Direction Finding system was patented in the early 20th century [1]. The idea was to compare the signal strength from a direction-sensitive antenna when it was “steered” in different directions. The main application of the technology was maritime and aircraft navigation, but being able to localize incoming signal energy also found other civilian and military uses.
