Chapter 5. Great Groups and the Ability to Collaborate
The first chapter in this book described part of a July climb of Mount Jefferson in Oregon’s Cascade mountains. There were two extremely critical decision-making junctures in this climb. First, the ice wall was expected to be a short, steep rock chute, but we were attempting an early-season ascent and we found ice. In coming up against the wall of ice, we learned of something new that called for serious reassessment. We had to ask ourselves: Is this the only route up? Do we have the right gear? Does one of us feel comfortable (or at least not completely freaked out) leading the way? There was pressure to not stop to make this assessment, because the time remaining in which to reach the summit ...
