Introduction

This book is the seventh edition of the Adobe Acrobat PDF Bible. As a result of feedback from many users, this edition reflects my efforts to include coverage of some topics that were missed in the previous version and to add additional material where users asked for more detail. As such, I've made an effort to cover as much of the new version as is possible in this single, comprehensive book.

What Is Adobe Acrobat?

Acrobat has evolved over time, and long-time users of Adobe Acrobat are familiar with the distinctions between the Adobe Reader software and Adobe Acrobat (either Standard or Professional). However, many users of Adobe Reader are still confused about what it can and cannot do. For example, many folks think that the viewing of Portable Document Format (PDF) documents is all you can do with Adobe Reader. Now in version X, Adobe Reader can do much more in terms of editing PDF documents. A good example is the new ability to add comments to a PDF document without needing to add special permissions to that document.

I explain in Chapter 2 that Adobe Reader is only one small component of Acrobat. Other programs included in the suite of Acrobat software provide you with tools for creating, editing, viewing, navigating, and searching PDF information. Regardless of your familiarity with previous versions of Acrobat, you should carefully review Chapter 2.
