Chapter 14

Solving Systems of Linear Equations

IN THIS CHAPTER

Bullet Processing the possible solutions of a linear system of equations

Bullet Transferring linear equations to graph paper

Bullet Breaking down and substituting systems of two equations

Bullet Handling systems of three or more linear equations

A system of equations consists of a number of equations with shared variables — variables that are linked in a specific way. The solution of a system of equations uncovers these links in one of two ways: with a list of numbers that makes each equation in the system a true statement or a list of relationships between numbers that makes each equation in the system a true statement.

In this chapter, I cover systems of linear equations. As I explain in Chapter 2, linear equations feature variables that reach only the first degree, meaning that the highest power of any variable you solve for is 1. You have a number of techniques at your disposal to solve systems of linear equations, including graphing lines, adding multiples of one equation to another, substituting one equation into another, and taking advantage ...
