The most-photographed person in the world in the nineteenth century was Gen. George Armstrong Custer. There are around 200 known pictures of him. Even a few decades ago, taking pictures was a costly enterprise. When I visited the Soviet Union on a high school class trip, I took around 300 pictures over the course of two weeks. But that, of course, has changed, quite dramatically, in the last few years: On a recent weekend trip to Disneyland, I took close to 1,000 pictures.
