Chapter 6. Platform Optimization
This chapter is all about the part of AEO that actually moves the needle, and honestly the part most programs spend the least time on. But before we get into the platform-by-platform tactics, it’s worth grounding the conversation in a number that kind of reframes the whole exercise.
Research from Profound and BrightEdge found that ChatGPT mentions brands roughly 3.2 times more often than it actually cites them with a clickable link.
Think about what that ratio implies for a minute. Essentially, for every time your brand earns a proper citation that points back to your site, there are about three other times it shows up in an AI response without a first-party citation. And those mentions aren’t fabricated out of nothing either. They’re being assembled from the rest of the open web (third-party reviews, news coverage, community discussions, directories, and the broader pool of training data) rather than from a direct link to a source you own.
That’s a pretty meaningful shift in framing. In fact, across our work and the data we’ve seen from peers, something on the order of 85% of a brand’s presence in AI answers is shaped by what happens off your site rather than on it. And yet most AEO programs still spend the bulk of their effort on the on-site, retrievable, optimizable layer. That’s the layer you can measure most easily, sure, but it isn’t where most of the influence sits.
And that gap is precisely why this chapter exists and why I split it into ...
