Chapter 8. The Future of Discovery
If you’ve made it this far, first of all, congrats. You just spent seven chapters learning a discipline that didn’t exist three years ago. Which naturally brings up a question I get at every conference talk, every client kickoff, and a lot of my LinkedIn DMs at this point.
“Is all of this just going to change again in six months?”
And look, fair question. The honest answer? Yeah. Some of it will. Probably sooner than six months, if we’re being real about it.
The specific retrieval architectures, the exact citation behaviors, and the particular ranking signals are all moving targets. They’re going to keep shifting. If you picked up this chapter hoping I’d tell you exactly what Google AI Mode is going to look like in 2028, I’m going to disappoint you. Nobody knows that. And honestly, anyone who says they do is probably trying to sell you a course. Or a SaaS tool. Or both.
But here’s the thing I keep coming back to after 20-plus years in search. The teams that actually thrive through platform shifts are never the ones who predicted every change correctly. They’re the ones who built their fundamentals strong enough that changes didn’t break them. And the fundamentals of AEO, making your content findable, retrievable, authoritative, and genuinely useful at the passage level—those aren’t going anywhere. If anything, every single trend I’m watching right now just reinforces them.
