Rick Prelinger is an archivist, filmmaker, writer, and educator based in the San Francisco Bay area. In 1983 he founded Prelinger Archives and spent the next two decades collecting over 60,000 “ephemeral” films—his term for amateur, advertising, educational, and industrial films. In 2002, the collection was acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress’s Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division, even as it continued to grow. For the past several years, his primary interest, both as a collector and as an academic, has been home movies and amateur films, with approximately 17,000 items currently held.
