Chapter 3. Blueprint for AI in the Enterprise

In technical architecture, a blueprint is a precise and structured plan that outlines the composition, structure, elements, and specifications of a system, software application, or technical solution. A blueprint is helpful because it provides a canvas that helps business teams, architects, engineers, and developers understand how the various parts of the AI solution will perform together to accomplish specific objectives.

The blueprint should speak to both the business audience and the technical audience, so using clear, concise language throughout is essential. Avoid unnecessary technical jargon. When it is necessary, clearly define technical terms, especially acronyms.

Since AI has many complex concepts and technical elements, it is a good idea to build a glossary of these terms as you go along. This approach will make the blueprint easier to understand for business leaders, nontechnical stakeholders, and team members. You can expect stakeholders to ask questions as they use the blueprint to better understand the proposed AI system’s benefits and potential challenges.

All this may sound rather abstract, so let’s look at a real-world example that illustrates how an AI architecture blueprint is necessary to develop an AI solution. Tesla’s Autopilot system uses AI to facilitate semi-autonomous driving. The system incorporates AI-enabled features such as adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and cruise control sensitive to traffic ...
