42The Innovation Leadership Mandate

The rough and the smooth of the leadership journey.

There's no denying that leading innovation is tough.

Intellectually, somewhat. Setting up a high-performing innovation ecosystem isn't a cakewalk, but it lends itself to existing programmatic, project-management–oriented skillsets. You can choose to build it and it'll happen in some shape or form.

Emotionally, though. That's the tough part. The not knowing. The ambiguity. The bets. The stakes of failure. The unknown outcomes. The dented egos. The anxiety. Who would choose these things?

I have good news and bad news. I'll start with the bad news.

The innovation leadership mandate isn't going away, in fact it's intensifying.

But the good news is that an effective innovation ecosystem overcomes many of the emotional chain-yankers that live on this side of the innovation journey.

What's more, innovation creates some of the most rewarding work people ever do in their careers. It connects people to purpose. It pursues better. It's a weird kind of soul food.

Based on my work with hundreds of leaders around the world, I've observed three factors that enable successful innovation leadership: Choose, Go, Grow. Let's take a look at each one.
