The year 2019 was like handing a baby a blowtorch: chaotic, fascinating, and absolutely dangerous. Deepfake technology was creeping into public consciousness, lurking in corners of the Internet where most people feared to tread. The few clips floating around social media were crude, glitchy, and deeply uncanny, yet utterly hypnotic.
Every time I saw one, I clicked Replay. These early deepfakes weren't perfect, but that was part of their charm. They warped your sense of reality just enough to make you question what you were looking at, and that cognitive dissonance was addictive.
I had heard whispers about a repository named DeepFaceLab, an open‐source deepfake tool buried deep in GitHub. It was one of the first publicly available tools that allowed users to experiment with AI‐driven face replacement, setting the foundation for what would eventually become a revolution in synthetic media. It was a Frankenstein's monster of different scripts held together by batch files and sheer willpower. The documentation was nearly unreadable and poorly translated from Russian, but it was all we had.
For someone without a computer science background, using it felt like trying to assemble a crashed alien spacecraft missing half the parts with instructions written in a dead language.
